​John Baker (JB) AM ESM, our chairman and dear friend, passed away suddenly on Friday, 8th August 2025. His dedication to his family, Surf Life Saving, the Adelaide Surf Lifesaving Rescue Helicopter, KWPX, and V-Star touched everyone. His warmth, laughter, and inspiration left a lasting impact, and his calm, humorous presence will be missed. I met John through surf lifesaving helicopter training, where his commanding presence and cheeky grin lifted spirits and created a great atmosphere. Socially, over dinner at JB's house, we shared many stories, wine, and ideas for modernising Search and Rescue through Advanced Air Mobility in Australia. On the first night, we sketched a plan on a napkin, a symbol of many great times with him. JB's passion and leadership drove V-Star's success, and his relentless enthusiasm was contagious. His love for his family, Surf Lifesaving, KWPX, and V-Star inspired us all. I asked him once how he manages to take on so much work, and he simply replied, “Tone, I just find it hard to say no to people.” JB’s legacy is immeasurable, and we will always remember him and remain in his debt.
